Landscape Designer Job Summary

Becky Bourdeau Design Inc. is a boutique Landscape Design firm with a solid word-of-mouth customer base built by our owner who has established a respected reputation in the industry over fifteen years and in the LA market for eight. Our focus is full-service landscape design including hardscape, built structures, plants, and décor for mid-level residential clientele (projects typically $35k - $300k) with a CA modern aesthetic and a common-sense sustainability approach—water-wise planting, efficient and “smart” irrigation, locally sourced materials, etc. We are a values-based company built on the idea that we can do amazing work that elevates people and environments, while building financial security (for ourselves and others) and having fun!

Due to steady and strong demand, we are very excited to be looking to hire a Landscape Designer to join our team. In this position, you will sell design services, cultivate relationships with clients, generate landscape designs that meet the client’s needs and wants using AutoCAD, and shepherd the project through bidding and installation by partner Landscape Contractors. In addition, you will procure materials from wholesale nurseries and other product vendors or fabricators, place plants on-site, and provide on-site input and direction to installers.You will also be responsible for all invoicing, payments, and record-keeping associated with your projects, as well as tracking and reporting on budgets and project profitability.

Skills and knowledge required:

Horticultural knowledge including plant ID and botanical names, especially knowledge of Southern CA plant materials and cultivation needs.

Knowledge of design principles and/or an eye for high-end design composition a must. I will need to like your style!

AutoCAD proficient and able to draft to-scale Plan View (overhead) property maps. SketchUp and Photoshop skills a plus.

Microsoft Office proficient, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Excellent communication skills, including written and verbal, especially meeting with clients and giving presentations, talking comfortably and confidently about budgets and prices, and respectfully working with many different types of people to achieve outcomes that everyone can feel good about.

Organized, detail-oriented, and have a head for the business needs as well as the creative.

Spanish speaking is a huge bonus!

Landscape Designer Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet with clients and determine the scope of work, appropriate design fee, and overall project budget

  • Measure and photograph job site

  • Create a to-scale base map and design(s) using AutoCAD, print and render in color by-hand with art markers, assemble plant and hardscape photo collages using PowerPoint and present to clients

  • Prepare an installation summary and meet with Landscape Contractor(s) and clients to review landscape project and obtain installation bids; assist with budget and schedule negotiations as needed

  • Assemble plant and decor materials list with sizes and prices; procure and oversee delivery from multiple sources to job site according to contractor’s schedule; place plants on-site

  • Oversee the installation, making regular site visits and working with the landscaping team as they bring your concept to life

  • Create and send invoices, follow up on payments, track costs and income to ensure revenue targets are met and report on project profitability

 

Landscape Designer Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture, Certificate or Associate’s degree in landscape design, or equivalent practical experience

  • 2 years experience in landscape design or a related field

  • AutoCAD and MS Office proficient, Sketchup is a plus

  • Plant ID and horticultural knowledge of Southern CA plant materials

  • Knowledge of design concepts, irrigation techniques, hardscaping, etc. with a particular eye for high-end, modern aesthetics and sustainability strategies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentation

  • Organized and detail oriented

  • Must have own reliable transportation, this job is 50/50 in-office and in-the-field

  • Own computer with AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT is a plus

  • Spanish speaking is a huge plus!

  • Must be vaccinated against COVID-19 and willing to wear face coverings in certain situations

 

This is a contract position averaging 15-20 hrs/week during a 60 day trial period, with the potential for a full-time salaried position plus profit sharing upon proven performance.
